Many factors drove the ex-slaves to leave the plantations to establish lives of their own in free villages. Their burning desire to be rid of ground naturalize altogether was because they associated plantation work at with slavery. This is understandable as they had just become free of the apprenticeship system, under which blacks were hypothetically free, and muted had to work on the plantations for a period of time.
